SILC Alumni Member (former Postdoc Member, University of Delaware) and member of our Spatial Network.

Research Interests: Understanding how people interpret symbol systems (e.g., maps, television, diagrams, etc.) and develop skills for relating symbols to the spaces and objects they portray.  This includes an interest in early geometry which appears to serve as a springboard for later STEM skills.  I also have strong interests in the use of media and technology for supplementing children’s spatial experiences.

Dr. Brian Verdine is a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Education at the University of Delaware working with Roberta Golinkoff on the Shape-Up Project.  Shape-Up explores the development of preschooler’s geometric and spatial skills to understand how these skills are constructed and inform the design of early interventions.  Brian received his B.S. in Psychology from The Pennsylvania State University where he first explored his interest in spatial research with Lynn Liben.  He received his Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Vanderbilt University where he worked with Georgene Troseth exploring children’s and adult’s learning from television and video games.
